If you do not obey the rules and regulations that are in place when it comes to driving on the roads in California, there is every chance that you could end up receiving a fine.

What is an improper left turn?

An improper turn happens when a motorist turns right from a left or center lane, or they turn left from a right or center lane.

In other words, a motorist turning left is only able to do so if they do so from the left lane, and when it comes to right turns, this can only be done from a right lane.

Understanding left turn laws

You need to make sure that the approach to a left turn needs to be made as near as possible to the left-hand edge of the extreme left-hand land or portion of the roadway that is legally available to traffic going in the direction of travel, such as a vehicle, and when you turn at an intersection, the left turn should not be made before entering the intersection.

Once you have entered the intersection, you need to make the left turn so that you leave the intersection in a lane that is lawfully available to traffic going in such direction upon entrance to the roadway.

In other words, you are not meant to make a left turn unless you are in the corresponding left land. Furthermore, before making a left turn, you need to be as close to the edge of the roadway or the curb as is reasonably possible.

Fines for making an illegal left turn

If you make an illegal left turn, you could receive one point added to your driving record, and a fine amounting to at least $234.

This is because it is not legal to do a left-hand turn when the signs displayed at an intersection prevent such turns, as according to the California Vehicle Code Section 22101. You may also be found guilty of violating this law if you do not obey traffic lifts and you make a left turn when the light is on red.

It is important to realize that the fines for illegal turns and improper turns can vary widely, as it does depend on where the incident happened and how severe the violation was. In most cases, they will range from around $50 to $300, so keep this in mind.

Fighting an illegal left turn ticket in California

If you have received a ticket for making an illegal or improper turn, you must speak with a reputable and experienced traffic ticket attorney as soon as you are able to so that you can fight the ticket.

A skilled attorney may be able to use a number of different defenses to help you when fighting your case.

For example, they may say that the signs were not marked clearly. If you have made a turn that was prohibited due to signage, your attorney may be able to argue that the signs were not clearly visible.

In addition to this, the attorney may be able to argue that the view of the events in the eyes of the citing officer was not accurate. In a lot of cases, these violations are very subjective. Your attorney may be able to state the view of the challenging officer.

How long will it take for you to receive a ticket?

Typically, the ticket will be sent to you via mail from the date it has been signed by the officer. You can then expect it to take a day or two for it to reach you.

Reducing or eradicating the cost of a no left turn ticket

The best way to ensure you have the greatest chance of avoiding the cost of a no left turn ticket is to team up with an experienced and reputable traffic attorney. They will have all of the experience and knowledge that is required to help you launch a successful case. They may be able to get the ticket scarped altogether and the point removed from your license.

Of course, there are no guarantees, but the best attorneys are honest about their clients’ chances of making a successful claim and whether or not it is worth going ahead with challenging the ticket or not. All it takes is one simple call to get a good understanding of how strong the case is against you and whether or not there is anything that can be done to challenge your ticket.
