Contest Without Appearing in Court
A Trial by Written Declaration allows eligible California drivers to contest a traffic ticket in writing, without appearing in court.
You will usually deposit the full fine with the court as bail when submitting your declaration. If you are found not guilty, the court refunds your bail. If the fine is reduced, the court refunds the difference. If you are found guilty, the court applies your bail towards the amount ordered and advises you of any remaining balance.
The court makes the final decision and may impose any lawful fine, assessment or penalty. Results are not guaranteed.
